Wednesday Class in Angers: learning English on a journey through time!

Share

What if Wednesdays were a chance to play, create, explore… and discover English naturally? At the Alternative International School of Angers, Wednesday Class welcomes children aged 3 to 11, whether or not they attend AISA, for a fun-filled day of English immersion.

This school year, our Wednesdays are taking us on a journey through time! Throughout 2026–2027, the children will explore how humans have lived and evolved through the ages, with our first stop in Prehistory.

Discovering English through play

At Wednesday Class, children learn by listening, taking part and enjoying themselves. Group games, creative workshops, stories and songs offer plenty of opportunities to become familiar with the sounds of English and build vocabulary.

Teachers speak English throughout the day, and themed activities are delivered entirely in English. French is used whenever needed to reassure a child, support understanding and ensure everyone feels comfortable.

Children do not need to speak English before joining us! Everyone can find their place and progress at their own pace in a caring, supportive environment.

First stop: Prehistory!

Three groups share this adventure, with activities adapted to their ages: the younger children with Claire, the middle group with Alexis, and the older children with Sofia.

Their first creations already offer a glimpse of their discoveries: portraits in which the children turn themselves into prehistoric characters through drawing and collage, as well as pictures of bears curled up in their shelters. Paper, colours and different materials give everyone the chance to use their imagination.

Throughout this first half-term, the programme also includes:

  • For the younger children: making shell fossils in clay, mammoth masks, prehistoric-inspired necklaces and games featuring sabre-toothed tigers.

  • For the middle group: discovering the Stone Age, archaeological digs, rock painting, creating prehistoric animals, exploring music and experimenting with ice.

  • For the older children: a Stone Age timeline, cave-inspired painting, jewellery making, building a village and a prehistoric escape game.

These activities make learning English meaningful: naming an animal, recognising a colour, following an instruction or discovering words for the things children create. Language becomes part of what they do and discover.

New themes will guide our journey through the ages, with a fresh focus every six to seven weeks.

A day that respects each child’s needs

Wednesdays combine activities in smaller groups, whole-group games, outdoor breaks and time to relax. Everyone comes together for lunch, followed by a nap, reading or quiet play, depending on each child’s needs.

The afternoon brings more activities, followed by a break and a snack. Children then enjoy free play while waiting for their families.

Morning drop-off is between 8:00 and 9:30 am, and afternoon pick-up is between 4:30 and 6:15 pm.

Families should pack a cold lunch or a warm meal in a suitable insulated container, a snack, a water bottle and slippers. Children who need them may also bring a comfort toy and a sheet for nap time.

Discoveries to share at home

At the end of each half-term, families receive their child’s completed work, a list of the English vocabulary learned and suggestions for reading in English adapted to their level.

These offer a lovely opportunity to share what children have discovered and continue enjoying English at home, at their own pace.

A school outing will also be offered at the end of the year to round off our year of exploration together.
